Dear Nora

My dear Nora,

I wanted to think of a perfect gift I could give you since I will be unable to be in Texas with you to celebrate your first birthday. After I thought long and hard I was grateful to have come up with the idea that I would write you a letter. Since words always matter I thought my words to you written down would be a perfect gift. Having only physically held you a few times during this first year of your life has been hard. Yet, it is always so much easier just thinking that Jesus holds you always In His Arms. I thought about the only gift I could give you that would last forever ... my prayers.

Today Nora, I pray asking God to some day give you a saving knowledge of Himself. I am confident that when I pray for your salvation that I am praying in accordance with God's will. I am grateful that God has put your daddy and mommy in your life to love you and gently instruct you. I am also grateful that He has given you big sisters, like Annika and Eden who love you, care for you, and share with you.

I pray that you and your sisters will be rooted and established and able some day to grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is for you....

Nora, I pray that Jesus will show you His way is perfect. God is already using you in the lives of those around you and I pray that He will continue to use you in this year ahead.

May you always know I love you but Jesus loves you way more.

Happy first Birthday Nora,
Love, nana

a hard day yet .... I continue to count Joy

On days like today I find it hard to count joy .... days like today, Monday, a day I usually go to work yet ....

because .... I was pushed on a Thursday, late September at my incision site. I went to the doctor on October 2 and she said that I could not be at risk of re-injury.

I talked with my new principal and assistant principal and they were more than gracious to say we want to protect you, your heath matters, we want you to be safe and they stated they would be looking to re-assign me ASAP

the hard part ..... I love my assignment. It's hard, it's a daily hard yet I know I am making a difference as I serve a population of students that have been "given up on" by others.

I tell them that I will never give up on them. I want to assure them that I love and care for them ....

Fast forward to last Thursday, October 11 when I was told I needed to go home half way though my school day ....

It left me confused, disappointed, discouraged and focused on what may be wrong, why was I asked to go home and now why was I asked to not return to work until ....

yet I will continue to count joy one day at a time ....

918. my home is safe and comfortable
919. a time to skype with my daughter in Afghanistan (seeing her safe)
920. an encouraging text from a friend
921. the beating heart of the golfer as he lays in bed next to me
922. the joy that comes in the morning
923. in my in box today:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

924. how great you are, Sovereign Lord! grateful that there is no one like You, and there is no God but you, as I have heard with my own ears
925. grateful for a drive to St. Cloud with daughter #3 to catch up on her life!
926. a worship song sung yesterday that brought me back to the truth

927.the light that is coming for the heart that holds on

# 8 2:45 am (weapon's guard)

August 21, 2007

Mom and Dad,

Well things aren't going so great here anymore. Last week there was a female that wrote a letter with some bad stuff in it. She tore it up and threw it away, but one of the holdevers in our bay found it and brought it to the first sgt. All of the females got smoked for a while and nobody will confess to writing it. Until she does, all the females have lost passes, phone privileges, and we all have to wear road guard vests wherever we go. It's not good for the males either because we can't sing cadences. Our phase banners are rolled (so everyone knows we screwed up bad), and worst, we didn't phase to blue. Then yesterday to make matters worse, another female wrote a letter and the first sgt. found it in the bay. It had a list of all the drill sgts. names and asked which one was the hottest. I've been crying a lot because we are all paying for two people's actions. Please pray that it gets solved because I really want to call and talk to you both. I'm trying to look on the bright side with everything. We have our FTX3 (field training exercise) starting on Thursday so I will be gone with the company from Thursday until Sunday. I'm a little worried about it but also very excited. Well I have to go for now, but please write soon. I miss you all so much. Love you. Ash

the number 7 caught my eye

I approached the door of Lifeway Christian Store to go in quickly and pick up a wedding shower gift as I knew exactly what I would purchase but … I know now that it was no mistake that in March, just after our Pastor had preached regarding our Rich in Generosity ministry focus that my eyes landed down a shelf or two to a book with the number 7 on the front of it.

I was intrigued as I had not seen a book title named with a number. As I often do I looked at the back cover, front cover and the table of contents. I sat down even though this was to be a quick trip to the store to buy a gift and paged through the pages. Oh my!, I found myself not setting the book down other than on the counter at the register to purchase. I went home and began to read.

The entire book has radically changed my thinking regarding stuff but the chapter that impacted my life significantly was Month Seven stress. It’s funny ‘cause generally I do not consider myself a stressful person. In fact most of the time I am fairly relaxed, with a blood pressure lower than normal. What was significant about this chapter is that even though it was titled stress it was more about rest; intentional resting.

I am a person who takes the Sabbath seriously or as some of my kids would say religiously. I don’t shop, go to movies, do laundry, clean the house etc. on Sundays. Rather most Sundays I take an intentional rest much of what I follow is from the book For God’s Sake Rest. What I loved about chapter seven was the seven daily pauses.

I read the book in the Spring of 2012 but I waited until this summer to try the seven daily pauses. I decided at the beginning of June to set my alarm on my phone for the seven pauses. Because I do not teach in the summer I felt this would be a good time to practice the pauses. I then took the chapter suggested readings from the Psalms and figured out beneficial times for me to practice the seven pauses. I wrote the times and readings down on a 3 x 5 card and placed the card in my small Bible that fits in my purse. The times I set my alarm were 5 am (which is usually when I wake up), 10 am, 12 noon, 4:30, 7 pm, 9:30, and I usually do not put the 12 midnight time in my phone. Even though I did not want to wake up on a regular basis at 12 midnight I did set the alarm on my phone for this timeframe for the first couple of days so I would get the full impact of the pauses. I loved the fact that I could stop and pick up my Bible and read and reread the Psalms that Jen had written in the book.

This exercise was life changing. You see, I am a person who has a daily quiet time each morning. But after my morning time I often do not look at the word throughout the day. This practice began a new habit of opening the word and reading it often throughout my day. I loved the practice and fully intend to go back to this chapter often along with the others. I recommend that you not let this chapter be read without practicing the pauses, without stopping to let the Word wash over you, without changing your habits of midnight, dawn, midmorning, noon, midafternoon, early evening and bedtime!
